Nike/Reebok Workers in Mexico Form Union — Ask for Continued Support in Battle for Recognition

The following letter was sent March 18, 2001, from the newly formed independent union in Atlixco, Puebla, Mexico, to United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) in the U.S.

Sisters and Brothers:

Receive warm greetings on behalf of the workers of Kukdong. Thanks to the support that we have had from you, today we have taken a very important step in our struggle. This was a meeting in which we formed the Independent Union of Workers at the Company Kukdong International de Mexico, or SITEKIM. (Sindicato Independiente de Trabajadores de la Empresa Kukdong Internacional de Mexico).

This is a union formed by the workers and for the workers, to enforce our rights.

We want you to know that we are conscious that without your support, this would not have been accomplished. Despite our different nationalities, we know we are united for the same cause of not allowing exploitation. It does not matter that they want to repress us, arrest us, or beat us; in the end we will accomplish our goals.

Now we need that you do not leave us alone, because the struggle will be a hard and long one. In the next days, we will be requesting that the government recognize us as a union. We know we are going to facemuch pressure and greater reprisals by the company-imposed union, the FROC-CROC.

For this reason, we ask for your moral and political support to continue our struggle, through letters and e-mails to the government of the State of Puebla, the Local Labor Board, Kukdong, Nike, and Reebok. We want Mexican laws to be respected and that there are no unnecessary delays in obtaining legal recognition of our union and a free, secret ballot election. This will be the next step of this struggle that we will continue until we have a collective contract with the company.

We hope that by our joint effort, other people will also have the courage to say “enough” to the exploitation of the working class and that the world can change through the unity of all.

We want to give you our heartfelt thanks, sincerely and respectfully, for all the unconditional support that you have given us, and we send you hugs from all the members of the Executive Committee.
